Photographer Pedro Guimaraes is, after all, just a “gajo” (portuguese slang for guy). The Romani gipsy word “gadjo”, which means non-gipsy, is the one that better defines this self-thought photographer, born in ’77, in the hangover of the “Carnations Revolution” that would radically change his Portugal country.

Although not beeing a gipsy, but knowing their philosophies, was with the inspiration of this tipicaly controversial culture that, at the peak of his university student career, Pedro ruined the hopes of his family in having a professional stable life. He stole his grandfather camera, read the obsolete instructions manual from the time his grand dad was a military man, and used the Internet to update himself to the point of knowing all the features of camera models that are not even really on the market. Despite this, he insists in using famous models from the 70’s.

In the meanwhile Pedro received some prizes, published small articles in some european magazines and exhibited his work in Portugal and France, which may have impressed some chicks. But, really important was that this made him believe that there is some dignity in beeing a photojournalist: photography can’t change the world but can turn it into a better place.

Nowadays Pedro dreams of recognition after passing away.
